The Poudre Wilderness Volunteers (PWV) was founded in 1995. Currently about 250 active members strong, PWV assists the US Forest Service Canyon Lakes Ranger District on the Roosevelt National Forest in Northern Colorado. PWV established its Weed Crew in 2007 to assist the Forest Service in monitoring and controlling noxious weeds as well as educating the public about the biology and negative impacts of these introduced plants on native plant and animal communities, and on entire ecosystems.
In 2009, the Weed Crew carried out forty weed pulls at sixteen different locations to control ten different weed species on approximately 159 acres. Those efforts totaled 681 volunteer hours on weed pulls themselves, and an additional seventy plus hours in training time! For their efforts, the Weed Crew and Jim Shaklee, its leader, received a Special Recognition Award from the Colorado Weed Management Association in 2008.
